NMSA and Big Brothers Big Sisters Strengthen Partnership
The National Middle School Association and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) have recently been working to further enhance their partnership, in order to further their goals to help provide support and guidance for adolescent youth.
Presently, BBBS has 125,000 mentors volunteering at over 10,000 schools across the nation. This in-school activity is called BBBS School-Based Mentoring. About one-third of these mentors volunteer at middle schools. BBBS has 412 agencies around the country and a number of them would welcome a partnership with a new middle school. We encourage you to contact your local BBBS office to discuss this (see instructions below).
In the coming weeks BBBS is communicating to all 412 of its agencies about Month of the Young Adult. They are encouraging their agencies to mark this important month in a variety of ways that draw attention to the importance of middle school age youth. In addition, BBBS will be presenting at one of our workshops at our NMSA National Conference in November. Look for further communications on BBBS from us.
BBBS is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. The BBBS mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable outcomes. Studies have shown that BBBS mentoring helps children become more confident in their schoolwork, get along better with their families, and makes them significantly less likely to use illegal drugs, drink alcohol or skip school.
