National Middle School Association
Mission Statement and Goals

Adopted by NMSA's Board of Trustees – June 2009

Mission Statement:

National Middle School Association is dedicated to improving the educational experiences of young adolescents by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to all who serve them in order to develop healthy, productive, and ethical citizens.

Goal 1: Extend National Middle School Association's status as the leading organization supporting the education and well-being of young adolescents by:

  • Establishing and strengthening strategic collaborations with our affiliates and other organizations.
  • Establishing structures and procedures to expand board and staff expertise on broad areas of association work.
  • Providing information and guidance to policymakers and stakeholders regarding effective middle grades practices.
  • Implementing public relations strategies to advance the association's visibility.
  • Assuring board members are actively involved in representing NMSA in a coordinated and action-oriented manner.

Goal 2: Provide professional development, resources, and services that engage and enhance the effectiveness of middle grades educators by:

  • Expanding professional development topics, delivery methods, and resources to meet the everchanging needs of diverse constituencies.
  • Expanding the scope of products and services related to This We Believe, including surveys, publications, and professional development.
  • Providing members with the resources, services, and guidance to meet their identified needs.

Goal 3: Ensure NMSA's stability, growth, and continued leadership in the field of middle grades education by:

  • Maintaining sound accounting and investment policies to ensure the fiscal stability and growth of the organization.
  • Assuring the infrastructure of the headquarters operation is capable of meeting the requirements of current and future demands.
  • Continuing to develop and expand NMSA's membership base and offerings.
  • Expanding external revenue sources through grants, sponsorships, and co-marketing venues that assist in meeting association goals.
  • Implementing a comprehensive marketing program.
